Hon. Justice Bart Katureebe speaking at the Law and Development Week 2018 in Washington
WASHINGTON: The Chief Justice, Hon. Justice Bart M. Katureebe, is attending the Law, Justice and Development Week 2018 in Washington DC at the invite of the World Bank.
He is one of the 25 VIPs from around the world the participating in key sessions and closed-door side meetings at the World Bank headquarters.
On Tuesday November 6, 2018, the Chief Justice presented a paper on: "Forced Displacement: Legal Protection and Development."
He stressed on the need for access to justice for vulnerable groups especially refugees and internally displaced persons.
He said issues of refugees should be a global challenge not matters of the host country. The CJ said host countries already have problems to provide adequate services for its citizens though the law requires refugees to have access to social services.
He further called for holistic resource allocation. "It does not help to build roads to internally displaced camps, without providing schools, hospitals, water as well as access to justice."
Uganda's Ambassador to the US, Hon. Mull Sebujja Katende; Hon. Justice Samir Adam Annour, the First President of the Chad Supreme Court; and Kenyan Chief Justice, Hon. Justice David Maraga, are some of the dignitaries taking part in the week-long activities.
